Unlock the Power of the Glean Note-taking Tool

Glean is not just another note-taking application; it’s a comprehensive tool designed to make the process of capturing and organizing information as seamless as possible. Whether you’re a student, a professional attending meetings, or someone who just wants to keep their thoughts in order, Glean has features that can help you achieve that.

Starting a New Recording in Glean

The first step in using Glean is understanding its basic unit of recording, known as an “event.” To initiate a new event, navigate to the Home tab within the application and select the “New Event” option.

This opens up a new workspace where you can give your event a name. For instance, you might call it “Note-taking Practice” if you’re just getting started. Once you’ve named your event, all you have to do is hit the record button, and Glean will start capturing everything you say.

Adding Text and Tasks During Recording

One of the standout features of Glean is its ability to let you multitask while recording. On the right-hand panel, you’ll see the recording timeline, but what’s even more interesting is the left-hand panel. Here, you can add text notes in real-time as the recording progresses. You can mark specific sections of the audio as important, flag them for review, or even add comments like “This will be on the exam” or “Need to follow up with the professor.”

But that’s not all; Glean also allows you to insert pictures, tasks, and definitions into your notes. For example, you could add a task like “Follow up with the Accessibility Guy on best practices for note-taking,” set a due date for it, and even prioritize it among other tasks.

The screenshot below represents the following:

1. The Notes section – where you can write notes or upload slides
2. The text section is where you can tag your audio notes as a heading, important, or review. You can also use this section to add a picture, a definition, or an action item.
3. The audio section – you can play back your audio or transcribe it!

Organize and Review Your Notes with Glean

After you’ve captured all the information, Glean offers robust features to help you review and organize your notes.

Transcription and Playback Features

Once you stop the recording, Glean can transcribe the audio into text. This is incredibly useful for those who prefer reading over listening or for those who might need a written record of the audio. The application provides two tabs: one for the audio and another for the transcript, allowing you to toggle between the two easily.

You can also play back the audio at varying speeds, which is useful for reviewing long recordings. Glean offers additional audio filters like low-pitch and high-pitch filters to clean up the audio and make it clearer.

Advanced Tagging and Collections

Glean allows you to tag specific parts of your audio with labels like “important” or “review.” These tags make it easier to revisit key sections of your recordings later. You can even select these tagged elements directly from your panel and listen to that specific part of the audio.

If you’re using Glean for multiple subjects or projects, the application lets you group related events into collections. For example, if you have multiple recordings for a history class, you can create a new collection named “History” and add all relevant events to it.

Universal Task Management

One of the most convenient features of Glean is its universal task management. Any tasks you add in different recordings or collections are accessible from a single dashboard. This makes it easier to manage deadlines and priorities across various projects or subjects.
