How to Add Alt Text to All PDF Hyperlinks at Once in Adobe Acrobat Pro DC
Adding alt text to every hyperlink manually in a PDF can be time-consuming, especially in documents with many links. Fortunately, Adobe Acrobat Pro DC offers a tool that automates this process, allowing you to ensure all links are accessible without manual effort. Today’s post is a step-by-step demonstration of this process.

Step-by-Step Guide: Adding Alt Text to Links Using Preflight in Adobe Acrobat Pro DC
1. Open the Print Production Tool
Start by opening Adobe Acrobat Pro DC and loading the PDF document you want to edit. Navigate to the “Tools” menu and select “Print Production.” This tool, although primarily used for preparing documents for printing, includes features that improve accessibility.
2. Access the Preflight Menu
Within the Print Production tool, locate and select the “Preflight” option. Preflight is a powerful feature that allows you to identify and fix various issues in a PDF, including missing alt text for links and annotations.
3. Choose the Correct Profile
In the Preflight menu, you’ll find a drop-down menu labeled “Profiles.” This menu offers different sets of predefined checks and fixes. Select “Acrobat Pro DC, 2015 profiles” to access the necessary tools for this task.
4. Find the Annotation Fix
After selecting the appropriate profile, click on the wrench icon, which allows you to choose a specific fix. A search bar will appear—type “annotation” into it. This will bring up the option “Create content entry for Link annotation.”

5. Apply the Fix
Select “Create content entry for Link annotation,” then click “Fix.” Adobe Acrobat will automatically add alt text to all hyperlinks in the document. The software analyzes each link and generates a corresponding alt description based on the associated on-screen text.
6. Save the Document
After applying the fix, save your document. This step ensures that the alt text is embedded in the PDF.
7. Verify the Changes
Once you’ve saved the document, verify that the alt text was added correctly to each link. Right-click on any hyperlink in the document and select “Properties.” The Properties window should display the newly added alt text. For example, if the link is a superscript number (like a citation), the alt text might simply be the number “1.”
Repeat this verification process for a few other links to ensure the fix was applied consistently.
Important Considerations
Ensure Accurate On-Screen Text
The Preflight fix’s effectiveness heavily relies on the accuracy of the on-screen text associated with each link. If the on-screen text is vague or incorrect, the tool may generate useless alt text. Ensure your document’s hyperlinks are correctly labeled before applying the fix.
Understand the Limitations
Although the Preflight tool saves time, it may not be perfect in every situation. Complex documents with unique or non-standard link structures may still require manual verification and adjustment of alt text.
Achieve Accessibility Compliance
This method is particularly useful for ensuring compliance with accessibility standards like PDF/UA and WCAG. By automating alt text addition, you can quickly enhance the accessibility of your documents, making them inclusive for all users.
Adding alt descriptions to hyperlinks in PDFs is a crucial step in creating accessible content. Adobe Acrobat Pro DC’s Preflight tool offers an efficient way to automate this process, ensuring consistency and saving time. However, always verify the accuracy of the generated alt text and ensure that your on-screen text is clear and descriptive.
