Understanding the “Path Object Not Tagged” Error

When you test a PDF with the PAC 2024 tool, you might encounter the “Path Object Not Tagged” error. This error indicates that the PDF has improperly tagged path objects, making them inaccessible to screen readers and other assistive technologies. These path objects can include graphical elements such as lines, shapes, and illustrations.

Steps to Fix the Error

Step 1: Accessing the Content Panel

The first step in addressing this error is to access the content panel in your PDF editor. The content panel allows you to see all the elements within your PDF, including text, images, and path objects.

  1. Open the PDF in your editor.
  2. Locate the content panel on the far right-hand side.
  3. Expand the content panel to see the list of elements.

Step 2: Identifying Untagged Path Objects

Once you have the content panel open, the next step is to identify the untagged path objects. These objects will appear as path tags within the content panel.

  1. Navigate to the specific page with the error.
  2. Hold the control key and select the arrow next to the page number to fully expand the content list.
  3. Look for path tags within the expanded content.

Step 3: Selecting and Tagging Path Objects

After identifying the untagged path objects, the next step is to tag them appropriately. This involves converting the path tags into artifacts, which are elements that assistive technologies can recognize.

  1. Select all the identified path tags.
  2. Right-click on the selected tags.
  3. Choose the “Create Artifact” option from the context menu.
  4. In the artifact type selection, choose “Page”.
  5. Click “OK” to apply the changes.
Convert all path tags to artifacts.

Step 4: Saving and Re-testing the PDF

After tagging the path objects, it’s crucial to save the changes and re-test the PDF to ensure the error is resolved.

  1. Save the modified PDF file.
  2. Re-test the PDF using the PAC 2024 tool.
  3. Verify that the “Path Object Not Tagged” error no longer appears.

Tips for Effective Tagging

Expanding Content Structure

For better navigation and selection, expand the content structure thoroughly. This helps in identifying all path objects that might be hidden within nested elements.

Handling Specific Elements

Pay special attention to elements like bullets in legends, as these are common areas where path tags might be found. Ensuring these elements are properly tagged is crucial for overall accessibility.
