Step 1: Identify Sections

Begin with a large PDF file containing multiple sections, such as chapters or segments. In our example, we have a document with sections already divided, including front material, introduction, chapters one to three, and beyond.

Step 2: Add Bookmarks to Your PDF

  1. Scroll or use the Page Down key to locate the beginning of a new section, such as Chapter 4.
  2. Create a new bookmark by selecting the bookmark tab and choosing “Create Bookmark.”
  3. Name the bookmark descriptively, e.g., “Chapter 4 – Norton.”
  4. Ensure you go back and add similar bookmarks for all other sections (e.g., Chapter 5) as needed.

Step 3: Complete the Bookmarks

Continue this process for each section in your PDF document. In this example, we’ve added bookmarks for all 25 chapters in a 12,149-page book. Be patient; this step may take some time.

Step 4: Split Your PDF with Bookmarks

  1. After adding all bookmarks, click on “Organize Pages” in Adobe Acrobat Pro DC.
  2. Select the “Split” option.
  3. Choose to split by “Top Level Bookmarks” as your criterion.
  4. Configure the output options: Use bookmark names for final names and select the desired output folder.
  5. Click “OK” and then “Split.”
Splitting a PDF using bookmarks

The software will automatically split the PDF into smaller documents based on your bookmarks. In our case, it generated 30 separate PDFs, which can now be easily managed.

You’ve successfully split a large PDF document into smaller, more manageable sections using bookmarks in Adobe Acrobat Pro DC. This technique is invaluable for handling extensive textbooks, manuals, or any document with distinct sections.
