PDF Accessibility Fundamentals training

Understand what’s happening beneath the surface of a PDF and why a document that looks accessible may still create barriers for people using assistive technology. This session explores PDF structure, tags, common accessibility failures, and how to determine whether a PDF can be successfully remediated.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explain how PDFs are structured and distinguish between a document’s visual appearance and its underlying accessibility structure.
  2. Describe the purpose of PDF tags and how they communicate headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, images, and other content.
  3. Explain how assistive technologies use PDF structure to navigate, interpret, and present content to users.
  4. Recognize common PDF accessibility problems that can make apparently simple documents difficult or impossible to use with assistive technology.
  5. Evaluate a PDF’s underlying structure to identify issues that may require accessibility remediation.
  6. Assess whether a PDF can be successfully remediated or whether returning to the source document and recreating the PDF is the more effective approach.
