Solving College PDF Accessibility Issues
Improper Tagging: Upon reviewing the tags panel, it’s evident that the document’s structure tags are inconsistent and improperly applied. Solution: Apply appropriate tags using Adobe Acrobat’s tagging tools. Replace generic tags with descriptive ones to ensure clear document structure and navigation.
Inadequate Alt Text: Although some images have alt text, they lack specificity and clarity. Solution: Enhance alt text descriptions to provide meaningful context and convey essential information to users who rely on screen readers. Ensure all images have descriptive alt text for comprehensive accessibility.

Missing Title Metadata: The document lacks title metadata, resulting in accessibility checker failures. Solution: Add a descriptive title metadata using Adobe Acrobat’s document properties. Include relevant information such as document title, author, and subject to improve document accessibility and organization.
Structural Element Errors: Structural elements such as figure tags are incorrectly applied, leading to accessibility issues. Solution: Use Adobe Acrobat’s tagging tools to correct structural element errors. Ensure proper placement attributes are added to elements to enhance document structure and navigation.
PDF UA and WCAG Compliance: The document fails to meet PDF UA and WCAG compliance standards, indicating significant accessibility barriers. Solution: Utilize accessibility checking tools such as the PAC 2024 tool to identify and address compliance issues systematically. Make necessary adjustments to ensure compatibility with accessibility standards.

Conversion Challenges: The PDF’s accessibility issues stem from inadequate preparation during the conversion process from Microsoft Word. Solution: Prioritize accessibility considerations during the document creation and conversion process. Implement accessibility best practices in Microsoft Word to facilitate seamless conversion and improve overall document accessibility.
